How long will it take to process my application form?

It usually takes about 1 week to process a fully completed application form (both parts).

Members who apply to withdraw their contributions on the ground of permanent incapacity to work are eligible to opt for a pension. After the application has been processed, an option form is sent to the Member for completion. This form must be returned within two months of its date of issue. Failure to do so would result in a lump sum payment.

If I recover enough to work again, am I eligible to rejoin?

Yes. If you have recovered enough to find permanent employment you may give notice to your employer and to the FNPF, within 3 months of commencing employment, that you wish to re-enter the Fund. The notice to re-enter must be accompanied by a certificate from a doctor, approved by the FNPF, stating that you are fit to undertake employment on a permanent basis.

Once your re-entry is approved, you will be given a new membership CARD and your employer will then be required to pay your contributions. As a re-entrant you will not be eligible for a pension, nor are your nominee/s eligible for Special Death Benefit.

Other hints which can help you

1 The FNPF is very strict on allowing withdrawals on medical grounds. You should therefore apply to withdraw only when you are sure that a recovery from treatment is remote. You should not use your sickness as an excuse to withdraw.

1 It is not always necessary for the FNPF to accept the medical certificate sent with the application form. In some cases the FNPF may need a second opinion. For this the medical report is referred to a Medical Board appointed by the FNPF. The Medical Board may be able to give its opinion after studying the medical report. But on some occasions the Medical Board may wish to examine the Member personally to assess the extent of incapacity. In such cases the Member is required to present themself for the medical examination. Any expenses incurred for this examination are paid by the FNPF.

If the Medical Board gives an opinion that you are not too sick to work again, the application to withdraw will be rejected.

1 A Member is not eligible to withdraw his/her contributions if the doctor does not give the required certificate. Under the FNPF Act, a Member may not withdraw part of their contribution for medical treatment and family support.

1 A Member who is laid off by their employer for medical reasons does not necessarily mean that they qualify automatically to withdraw their funds on medical grounds. The application will be assessed under FNPF regulations.

1 You cannot use your FNPF contributions as a security for any type of loan. Therefore, you should not try to enter into any such agreements with any of your creditors. Under the FNPF Act, any such assignment or agreement will be invalid.

1 The application form, and the procedure for applying to withdraw your contributions from the FNPF, is very simple. It is not necessary for you to apply through an agent. Also, the information about your money in the FNPF and the date of birth etc is confidential and the Fund may refuse to give the information to anybody other than yourself.
